Still Sweet, Even Without Sugar

Twelve-year-old Jeremy gets a kick out of life, and not just on the soccer field.
He is an energetic, young man who also enjoys playing music, most notably guitar
and piano. In many respects, one might think that Jeremy is like any other typical
middle-school kid. But therein lays the rub. Four years ago, Jeremy was diagnosed
with type 1 diabetes.
Jeremy is the son of Carolina First’s Director of Compensation, Benefits, and Payroll.
Jeremy was one of nine lucky kids with type 1 diabetes to participate in an expedition
called IronKidz put on through an organization called “Insulindependence” (
www.insulindependence.org).
Traveling to the Midwest in September, the purpose of the trip was to work as a
team with other kids to prove to themselves that they have what it takes to overcome
diabetes in the face of adversity. Under the guidance of certified wilderness guides
and experienced diabetes mentors, these IronKidz embarked on a 3-day canoe journey
along the Namakogen River in Western Wisconsin.
In addition, over the summer, these IronKidz were paired with adult diabetic athletes
planning to participate in an Ironman triathlon competition in Wisconsin. The kids
corresponded with these adult athletes over the summer as they trained for the competition.
After their canoe trip, the kids applied their newly discovered diabetes management
skills to helping their triathlon buddy cross the finish line in triumph.
But this trip was a lot more for Jeremy than just having a good time roughing it
in the wilderness for a few days. He also raised $3,500 for Insulindependence thanks
to generous donations from his family, friends, coaches, and teammates. According
to his father, “Jeremy returned from his trip excited, energized, and confident
about the future. He learned a lot about the importance of being personally responsible
for his health and also being disciplined toward his goals whether it is monitoring
his blood sugar levels, eating responsibly, or training for and competing in an
athletic competition.”
